Unique Sourcing

One element of Borealis’ success has been our ability to develop exceptional investment opportunities from two distinct sources – the sector-focused relationships that we have built nationally and the underserved technology community in Northern New England.

Sector-Based Opportunities
Our team members have succeeded as entrepreneurs, operating executives, and investors in the application software, Internet, and mobile media industries. Along the way, we have built relationships nationally with the individuals and businesses who have shaped these industries in the past and also with those working to redefine their future. Put simply, we know the leaders in these sectors and are known by them. Most of the opportunities we pursue emerge from these relationships.

Northern New England
While we tap our sector networks to invest nationally, we also find tremendous opportunity in the vibrant but underserved technology community north of Boston. Borealis is based in New Hampshire – whose “Live Free or Die” motto proclaims the rugged individualism exemplified by so many successful Yankee entrepreneurs – and we are the most active early-stage tech investor in the region. Borealis leverages our deep ties to Northern New England’s research institutions, technology organizations, and entrepreneurial communities to gain a “first look, last look, and inside look” at the most promising new technologies and emerging companies.

In particular, Borealis is uniquely focused on cultivating opportunities arising from the extended Dartmouth College community, including commercializing technologies developed at the Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Beyond our work to commercialize research innovations on campus, Borealis also uses our close ties with the Dartmouth community to source investment opportunities with alumni entrepreneurs across the country.
